Sunday 14th May 2006 by Joseph Masetle
WORKING CLASS COMMUNITY CAN DRAW A LESSON FROM SATAWU
The premature compromise agreement of about 8% by the fly-by-nite unions in the security industry is a faux pas and plain treachery. The demand by SATAWU demand is humanly justified. It seeks to define better life and a restoration of human dignity.
The heroic strike of SATAWU though tedious and sprinkled with maiming and slaying of traitors, is a sheer response to the continuationof abuse of the workers by employers. The 8% faction (...)

AVCC Alexandra Vekunezele Crisis Comitee (Alexandra Vukuzenzele Crisis Committee - AVCC)

Monday 15th November 2004 by Vicky
AVCC is a community organisation that was formed in February 1999 in response to problems our community was facing. We are fighting against poor living conditions, evictions and electricity cut-offs amongst other things. Our central struggle has been the fight for ownership of an area of abandoned flats that were first occupied in March 1999.
The flats had been vandalised and were missing windows but we tried to fix them by ourselves. We had troubles from the start from a company called (...)

Electricity in Tshwane (Soshanguve Community Development Forum - SCDF)

Tuesday 5th October 2004 by Paul Mfisa
The municipality of Tshwane is making lot of profit through electricity. The amount that ESKOM is charging for a unit is unreasonable; Tshwane is charging extra because they want to benefit. ESKOM is charging 25 cents per unit whereas Tshwane is charging 70 cents.
In 1994, Tshwane municipality made an agreement with ESKOM according to which the municipality would be responsible for the management of electricity within all Tshwane communities. As it is the case for water, rubbish and the (...)

SCDF stands for Soshanguve Community Development Forum. This organisation was formed in May 2003 and already has more than 150 members. We, as people of the Soshanguve Community in Tshwane (near Pretoria), started this forum because we realised that it is very important to group people and to fight against the effects of privatisation of basic services. We fight privatisation because we don’t want water cut-offs, pre-paid meters and so on; that’s why we are also affiliated to APF (...)

Another Shooting in Orange Farm (Orange Farm Water Crisis Committee - OWCC)

December 2003 by APF
"It is not easy to stand up for your rights today." Philemon Tjeba, Orange Farm Water Crisis Committee (OWCC). This is something that activists in townships in South Africa are learning quickly as another active member of the OWCC has been the target of an orchestrated shooting. On 20 October 2003, at 8 in the evening, Alice Ngubane and her family heard shots being fired as they sat quietly in the darkness of their shack - their electricity had been cut off. They assumed that the shots (...)

Her opposition to privatisation manifested itself when she joined the Orange Farm Water Crisis Committee. Her determination to see the lives of the poverty-stricken masses improved was confirmed by the active role she had played in the movement. There is no case against the Kensington 87! (Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee - SECC)

Thursday 23rd January 2003 by APF
Yesterday (Wednesday 22nd January), the almost year long case of the Kensington 87 was finally heard in the Jeppe Magistrate’s Court (Johannesburg). If it was not obvious before, then the proceedings of yesterday have clearly revealed that the entire case has, from the beginning, been driven by the ANC government’s political agenda against grassroots activists opposed to its cynical, anti-poor policies.
To try and make its non-existent case, the state prosecutor called three witnesses. Two (...)
